 Building with Rammed Earth
Rammed Earth houses are sculptural, monolithic and elegant.
From the outside, they appear to have grown from their environment and to retain the connection with the earth from which they have been formed.
Internally Rammed Earth houses possess their own distinctive qualities of purity of line, mass, form and timelessness. There is a unique beauty in the compaction layers visible in the walls, with variation of light producing subtle changes in colour and reflectivity
in the sunlight the walls glow.
Energy efficient climate control is achieved naturally in a Rammed Earth home as the walls have a high thermal mass, enabling them to store warmth in the winter and keep the interior cool in summer. There is less temperature variation in the home, which can eliminate the need to install or run air conditioning. Rammed earth walls have become popular in wineries for this quality of thermal stability.
During the winter, heating costs are greatly reduced when the thermal properties of Rammed Earth walls are combined with good passive solar design. Heating is started later in the year (and the day), turned off earlier and on many sunny winter days, is not needed at all.
Well designed rammed earth homes complement their environment and are correctly sited on the owners land to ensure the capturing of this natural energy.
Rammed Earth designed buildings have been constructed in cold, wet climates, in humid tropics, mountains, on the coast, on flat or steeply sloping blocks. We have built domestic, educational and commercial projects, and can build walls only or the complete structure.
